Hours: Full time. Occasional evenings and weekends required.
Salary: $50,000
Benefits: Paid vacation and sick days, federal holidays off, the last two weeks of the year off, BlueCross low-deductible PPO medical and dental, 100% of premiums paid for by employer.
Location: In person. Office is currently at 602 E 61st St.
Org summary: Southside Together does community organizing, primarily in Woodlawn, South Shore, primarily with Black working-class tenants, mental-health advocates, and youth. Our campaigns include the Obama CBA campaign for affordable housing, the Treatment Not Trauma campaign for free public mental-health clinics and police-free mental-health first response, and campaigns led by youth at Hyde Park Academy High School and Parkside Elementary School. We are the 2024 merger of Southside Together Organizing for Power (STOP) and Not Me We.
Responsibilities:
Office-space management
Purchase and maintain supplies, furniture, and equipment
Supervise office cleaner. Keep office and supplies organized. Do tasks to keep office clean or manage staff in doing so.
Develop and lead staff in maintaining office practices, norms, and policies around office space, ranging from cleaning up to locking up to reporting problems.
Coordinate use of space via reservations and calendars. Manage access to space via keys.
Hire and manage other contractors like handymen as needed
Development (fundraising)
Enter individual and grant contributions into donor database and other records.
Produce and coordinate annual and ongoing written donor thank-yous and tax acknowledgements.
Ensure retention of monthly donors, especially by contacting lapsed donors
Maintain organization of development-related files. Provide development-related documents for audit.
Procure and coordinate vendors for fundraising events like gala, like venue, caterer, and musicians
Occasionally lead certain smaller or medium fundraising events with support from development director
Participate in development committee, fundraising from individuals, and occasionally, meetings with institutional funders (grantors)
Make routine entries and uploads for grants (routine as opposed to writing answers to open-ended grant questions)
Event support
Participate in planning for organization-wide events and activities. Manage staff and volunteers working on event logistics.
Order food and prepare supplies for organization-wide events
Participate in events and lead logistics during them
IT
Track technology assigned to staff and used for other purposes like events
Maintain printer. Troubleshoot and get warranty support for malfunctioning technology.
Purchase technology. Research technology to purchase, with or when requested by development director.
Support staff, especially new staff, in learning software and using computers
When a staff member leaves, close our her staff Google Workspace and other accounts
Data
Supporting staff with tracking participation like event turn-out via forms and check-ins
Maintaining good data by monitoring database accuracy, removing duplicates, and working on how we log things in our database
Answer questions and produce reports based on data
General
Occasionally participate in organizing, for instance, door-knocking
Qualifications
Past involvement in a community or labor organizing campaign as a leading volunteer or as a staff member
Personal understanding of racial and economic justice, especially around housing, health, and/or youth
Preferred but not required: familiarity with Chicago’s South Side and Black communities
Comfort with people of diverse ages and backgrounds
Associate’s degree, or two years’ full-time work experience in an office. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Competence in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and any database. Currently our database is EveryAction, which is related to MiniVAN.
Ability to do household maintenance like assembling furniture
